Local, up to date and current directory for baby businesses in Suffolk.

In todays Expert Spotlight we get to know Steph from St Edmundsbaby a little better. Steph is quite simply super woman with the amount of things she is constantly juggling- and she is always looking for volunteers to help out, so if you have any spare time on your hands and would like to help out in any way drop her a message.

Do you have a shop front? Where are you based?

nope – although most of the events are held at The Apex and at West Stow Country Park. Mostly based in and around Bury St Edmunds

How did your business come about? Did it start as a hobby or did you know that you wanted it to be a business from the very beginning?

It started as a blog when my baby was about two or three months old and I was desperate for support and couldn’t find it. I had thought of doing a magazine at that point but didn’t have the energy or the time. There was always a little bit of me that hoped it would let me earn enough money I could afford to stay at home with my baby.

Tell me a bit about your business, what makes it special?

St Edmundsbaby started out as a blog to share reviews of places to visit and groups that we had been to. It was something that I would have found useful as a new mum. It now includes a website, with a directory of local parenting businesses and services, links to local and national support services, and all sorts of resources about local attractions and events.

There is also a biannual magazine, which is available online on the website, and in print. This is free to readers, and includes articles and stories about pregnancy, parenting and families. It contains a what’s on section, a useful contacts page, and adverts for a variety of local businesses and classes for parents.

Since 2015 we have started hosting events, which include two Pregnancy & Parenting Fayres at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds, an outdoor Family Fun Day at West Stow Country Park, and various other events in and around Bury St Edmunds throughout the year. This gives local independent businesses an opportunity to showcase their skills in a friendly environment and within a wonderful venue.

Since 2016, we have branched out to form a separate organisation to fundraise and offer support to local parents. We now have a breastfeeding support network up and running and are in the process of setting up a pre and postnatal mental health support group. These are run by volunteers and are free and open to everyone.

How long have you been in business?

Since 2012, when my little one was a few months old.

What is your favourite part of being your own boss?

Choosing my own working hours and, most importantly, getting to stay with my child.

Time to get a bit personal…

What kind of family commitments do you need to juggle along with your business? How do you find balance?

I am a full time mum to a five year old! I have recently (and fairly reluctantly) let her go to an educational group one morning a week, and she also has one day a week with my mum. Otherwise we’re a team. She comes along to meetings, helps me do research, and is the face of my business. Sometimes (especially when a deadline looms), I feel that I get too involved in my work, and I often have to make time for her. I work late at night when she’s asleep, which has always been when I work best.

What is your favourite tv show, food, or song?

Haha! So anything with superheroes 🙂 Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Smallville etc

Food – pudding! Especially chocolate (in any form) and fruit crumbles.

Song – changes regularly depending on my mood – I love songs that we can all sing along to loudly in the car! Currently it’s anything from Moana…

What can you be found doing on a weekend? or when you have time off?

What’s time off? Normally in a forest, or a farm, or a zoo, or a park… catching up on house work, garden etc lego marathon sessions or movie nights

What is your favourite place to get away to? And why?

A forest calms me down almost immediately – especially when birds are singing! Pretty much anywhere that has no people, just animals and birds, like a nature reserve.
